Our oldest daughter’s boyfriend is majoring in recreation in college. We’ve subjected poor Sam to plenty of teasing about this. I mean, how can you not joke about a required college course called “The Theory of Leisure”? But the reality is that recreation–that critical ability to re-create our energy and revitalize ourselves–is becoming strong an increasingly important element in our time-crunched lifestyles strong. Recreation majors learn about rock-climbing and outdoor survival tactics, true, but they also focus on the validity of devoting time to wellness via connection with our natural surroundings.

Dictionary.com offers this definition of leisure: “freedom from time-consuming duties, responsibilities, or activities.”

“Freedom,” it says. That’s a big tip right there. It implies that you are released from something, that you have been set free. “Time-consuming duties, responsibilities, or activities.” Duties and responsibilities are things we MUST do, but activities are things we tend to choose. It’s funny how attached we get to our routines. We end up doing things—even those that we grumble about–without seeing that we chose to do them in the first place and we can choose to stop

doing them. In a culture that worships busy-ness, leisure is an ironic status symbol.

Most of us operate under the premise that we must EARN our leisure time. We see it as a reward for maintaining a frenetic pace for weeks, months or even years. Leisure is seen as the ultimate destination in our work lives, a place calling to us as we toil. We’re forgetting that we have the power to choose leisure, even if that takes a bit of creativity and a finely-honed ability to say no. In addition, we’re making the critical mistake of choosing an all-or-nothing approach–we see leisure as something we’ll have when we retire, assuming we can avoid the stress-related illnesses that might take us down before we get there. Our vitality–as individuals and as a society–is dependent upon our ability to rest, reassess and reinvigorate. We need leisure time to gain clarity and see where we’re going. Since my husband and I are 40-something Americans currently living in Mexico, a lot of people assume that we are retired. We’re not–in fact, we don’t think we’ll ever retire in the traditional sense of the word. But we have a lifestyle that is almost laughably leisurely. Every time our landlord drops by, we are sipping coffee in the courtyard, eating popsicles under the umbrella, or floating in the pool. He must think we’re the laziest–or luckiest–people in the world, but we like to think of ourselves as working recreation majors.

We’re actually extremely focused on work when we’re doing it, but when we’re done, we play without any hesitation or guilt. We know it’s the most important thing we can do for our health, happiness and the quality of our work.We all have the power to make daily choices that give us more time for leisure. You don’t need to be rich. You don’t need to be adventurous. You don’t need to move or quit your job. All it takes is a bit of clarity about what matters most, and more focus on that “freedom” part of the definition of leisure and less on the “time-consuming duties” part. A friend of mine, an emergency room nurse, says that it’s a mistake to use the phrase, “Life is short.” As she sees it, life is LONG.

There is plenty of time to relax and play. She’s seen a lot of 50-something almost-retired folks in full cardiac arrest, and she’s had many opportunities to learn that all work and no play can

make Jack a very unhealthy boy.I admire the fact that Sam is majoring in recreation. He’s more likely to make a difference in the way people live their lives than someone who is hell bent on creating a new gizmo factory.

Sam spent his childhood summers in an isolated cabin on a lake, cavorting with a dozen cousins far from phones, video games, organized sports, or shopping malls. He can’t imagine why anyone would choose to live without nature and recreation as priorities.Perhaps that “Theory of Leisure” course should be a requirement for all of us.

When it comes to national parks recreation camping, there is more than just bringing a sleeping bag and tent to the great outdoors. The most successful camping trips are well-planned, as it takes quite a bit of effort to survive an evening in our national parks and forests.

You have to be prepared for emergency situations. What if you get lost? Would you know how to survive and find your way back or signal for help? What about encountering wild animals? Would you know what to do if you were faced with an angry bear caught raiding your food at night?

Plan your route before you leave. Collect any useful map you will need for this trip. Road maps, trail maps, and park maps detailing the national park system of the park you’d be visiting.

Be sure that you check the weather forecast before you head out, and then pack accordingly. Try to plan your trip for a time that will be dry: it is simply not as much fun to explore the outdoors if it is raining. Even if rain is not in the forecast, you should still pack your gear with foul weather in mind. Better to have brought too much gear than not enough.

Bring a First Aid Kit. This kit should be equipped with anything that could be useful for any sort of minor injury that could result from camping in our national parks and forests. The kit should include antiseptic, gauze, bandages, insect repellent, sunscreen, pain relievers, tweezers, and a pair of scissors.

Make room for emergency supplies. National parks recreation camping sometimes can take a turn for the worse if you or a member of your group get lost or injured within a national park system.

Take a compass, extra water, flashlight, knife, whistle, high energy food like energy bars, waterproof matches or fire starter fluid, an extra change of warm clothes, and bug spray.

Keep all trash sealed. While camping in one of the country’s many national parks and forests, do not leave any trash behind and recycle anything you can. Conversely keep all food sealed and hid away.

Open food while national parks recreation camping is an open invitation to any wildlife to come to your camp to feast. Beware of any animals that come near. Most animals feed at night so if you happen to hear one, a flashlight may ward them off.

Look out for bugs. The biggest hazard you’d most likely face are bugs. Depending are where you’re camping, bees and hornets will be attracted to scents such as food, perfume, and dark colored clothing. Gently brush them away if they approach. Swatting will only aggravate them.

Pitch your tent in a nice, safe, dry, flat spot away from the campfire. National parks recreation camping is unpredictable at best. By anticipating the worse, you can avoid many accidents. Look out for a spot to place your tent that doesn’t look like water would pool or make the ground muddy if it were to rain. Always use a flame retardant tent in case of stray sparks from the fire.

The small town of Hood River resides at the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, a National Scenic Area and a premier destination for anyone who is serious about recreation.

Hood River was once an agricultural center surrounded by pear orchards, but fifteen years ago the town became a mecca for windsurfers. Although it was windsurfing that put the Columbia River Gorge on the recreation map, today the gamut of the recreation industry is firmly established in the scenic Gorge, and Hood River is its base of operations.

If you can name it, then there is someone doing it someplace in the Gorge - from kayaking and kite surfing to mountain biking and snowboarding. It’s all available within half an hour of downtown Hood River.

Passing along the main street of this little town where colorfully painted Victorian homes on the steep hillsides overlook several dozen shops and restaurants, there is a sidewalk bustle of hard-bodies seeing and being seen. They step in and out of boutique sport shops where one can order a custom wet-suit or select obscure handmade flies for fly-fishing.

Nearly every parking space is occupied by an all-wheel-drive vehicle sporting a Yakima or Thule roof rack that secures some kind of recreational gear.

On one survey of the six block stretch that comprises the main drag, there were one or more of the following on display atop the sporty vehicles: kayaks, snowboards, mountain bikes, windsurfing boards, skis, road bikes, and although there wasn’t a canoe this time, there often is.

Those roof-top items are just the beginning. A look inside some of the rigs reveals the greater depth of recreational opportunity. Small kite-sailing boards, wet-suits, fishing rods, hiking packs and boots are visible in many of the vehicles.

Go down to the marina and there is even more: sail boats, motor boats for water skiing, jet skis, and an outfitter for white-water rafting on tributaries of the Columbia River.

If there is an outdoor sport that you love - water, snow, mountain, whatever! - or a sport that you’d like to try, then the Gorge is the place for you. It’s happening here, guaranteed.

And after a grueling day on the slopes, on the river, or on the trail, you can relax at one of the many charming bed-and-breakfasts or historic hotels (Hood River was part of the Oregon Trail, after all).

A recreation antique are things like Ceramics and Pottery, Beer Steins and Glass, Plates and Dishes, Pots and Pans, you get the idea right? Recreational antiques are the most collected types of antiques.

Some times when people collect recreational antiques they don’t collect them because they want to resell them they collect them because they want to add more to their collection. Some people do collect antique glassware, Wine Glasses, Drinking Glasses, Whiskey Glasses, Beer Steins and any type of glasses. Silverware or Flatware from the Civil War days.

Other types of recreational antiques are antique cars and motorcycles. The very first Fords Model T, these types of cars are great for car collectors. With new engines and overhauls, big time car dealers and collectors restore the body of the car and then they replace the engine and they usually take these cars to auto shows. They carry very heavy insurance just in case.

The same is said of the motorcycles with the sidecars that date back to the early 1900’s. These motorcycles were used when people could not afford cars. If you are a motorcycle enthusiast and you have almost every type of motor cycle there is then you can add one of these old fashioned motorcycles.

Antiques are not always purchased top resell to make more money. There are people all over the world that purchase motorcycles and cars as well as ceramics and pottery, glassware and flatware just to say they own something from over 100 years ago, it is almost a prestige and status thing. People admire other people décor and if you have a few antiques among them then you will be sure to be the center of attention.

There are antique shows that come around and if you are a register antique owner, you may be asked to share some of your antiques with the show so other people can see your collection and you can see what everyone else has, it may give you an idea of something else to add to your collection.

Have you ever wondered why your body feels different in a good way after you come home from an outdoor park? Sports recreation in outdoor parks is rapidly becoming the fitness choice of many people. Every day, millions of people leave their homes, offices and schools to find refuge in outdoor parks.

In recent surveys of all ages participating in sports recreation at outdoor parks, the most frequent reason for going to outdoor parks is to think. Simply the act of getting away and being alone with nature provides a positive mental attitude adjustment. For many, this is a wonderful time for spiritual thoughts and prayers while surrounded by God’s creation.

Our hectic schedules, deadlines and family commitments can rob us of our vital need to be alone with our own thoughts. Without this opportunity to unwind, think, talk to our inner self, we suffocate on outside demands we place on ourselves.

Sunshine and fresh air are powerful ways of recharging our bodies. Sunshine provides vitamin D through our skin. This much needed vitamin enhances our mood and keeps our bodies in shape. Simply ask a friend or relative living in the northwestern area of the United States. Many people living in Washington State and Oregon will take trips to sunny Arizona or southern California to get “sunshine.”

A really good time to visit an outdoor park for sports recreation is right after a large rainfall. The air “smells” crystal clear. Your nose perks up in wonder. For those of us in cities with smog and stagnant air, we feel incredibly powerful through our senses.

Exercise and bonding with your animal ranks very high on survey lists about recreation. Your animal, like us, requires frequent exercise. Is it any wonder that overweight animals tend to mimic their owners simply due to mirroring the owner’s exercise habits? Dogs are not the only pet that enjoys the outdoors. Our guinea pig and rabbit love to go with us to the park. A small foldable metal pen allows them to graze and jump around. Your pet deserves the same exercise benefits that you enjoy. Take them along!

Join a pick up game of basketball, soccer, football or start your own. Outdoor parks are full of single people and friends begging for group sports recreation. Some of these pickup games involve former college and semi-pro players that refuse to give up their passion for the sport. Be warned – the pickup games will give you a serious fitness workout!

Trails, woods and rivers or lakes of water are common in outdoor parks. On busy weekends the trails look like rush hour on Monday morning. Bicycles, joggers, skaters and walkers compete for the pine mulch softness and escape of a well groomed trail.

Don’t forget that most dogs love water. A stream or shallow lake makes for a great workout for your best friend. Remember to bring the towels for a wet ride home though. Many lakes will allow fishing and some allow row boats. If you have not rowed a boat in many years, you will discover the long lost muscles screaming to get out. This is wonderful for upper body workouts. A couple alone in a row boat in the middle of a lake at dusk creates memories not soon forgotten in our lifetime.

Monkey bars and other workout stations are frequently located in good outdoor parks. These stations typically have directions and guidance for sets of exercises. This is more proof where a large gym of equipment is not necessary to get back in shape. Dips, pull-ups, push-ups and squats provide excellent exercises to tone up your body. Where is a better place to workout except in the middle of nature? Seize the moment to get fit at a station.

Basketball, tennis and handball courts are also available in many parks. It is not uncommon to wait hours to join a pick-up game in basketball. The tennis courts are usually full too on pretty days so arrive early. Handball is one exercise that seems to be a well kept secret. This is similar to racquetball but with only one flat surface. Running around this court chasing a little rubber ball with your hands will provide incredible fitness benefits. The wall is used for tennis players in practice or while waiting on a court.

So what are you waiting for? Turn off that computer or television set and GET OUT. Get out of the house. Get out of your office. Take a friend or family member. Outdoor parks for sports recreation is one of the best kept secrets for getting and staying in shape. Now, GET OUT!

River cruising has become a very popular form of recreation today. Whether it is just for a few hours, or a few days or even a month, a river cruise can be a very exciting as well as relaxing vacation.

River cruises are of many kinds, depending upon the style, the size of the ship, the number of travelers, the various options, the price and the duration. The most common distinctions are the luxury cruises, budget cruises, expedition cruises, niche cruises, sailing cruise lines, wilderness cruises, adventure cruises, small cruises, romantic cruises, single cruises and so on.

There are many river cruising options in the United States. The most popular one is the Mississippi River cruise. This river, which runs from Minnesota to Louisiana, is the fifth longest in the world. Mississippi River cruising can be in an old fashioned steamboat that reminds you of Mark Twain, or it can be in a luxury cruise ship that offers state-of-the-art indulgence.

There can be several activities in the Mississippi River cruise, including: swimming pools, spas, casinos, recreation centers, fitness centers and gymnasiums, gourmet dining, restaurants, bars, salons, game rooms, night clubs and others. They are ideal for all kinds of activities ranging from a romantic night to cocktail parties, singles’ party, a pajama party, a business reception, or even a wedding!

Mississippi River cruises are also designed according to creative themes, like: Relaxation On The River, Spring Pilgrimage, Gardens Of The River, Legends Of The 50’s, Riverventures, Veterans Reunion, Thanksgiving Holidays, Golfing On The River, World War Ii, Big Band, Great Steamboat Race, History Of Steamboating etc. The main source and destination points are: New Orleans, Memphis, Chattanooga, St. Louis, Galveston and Pittsburgh. The cruise can be either round-trip or from one location to another.

Mississippi River cruises come at various prices, depending on the kind of the cruise (luxury/economy), the duration of the cruise, the facilities provided and other discounts or packages offered. Discounts are generally off-season discounts or group discounts. Packages can be for families, very large groups, two-way bookings, hotel bookings or more. Prices range from $1,100 to $3,250.

Information about Mississippi River cruises can be obtained from travel agencies, offices of the cruise lines, and from advertisements. The Internet is a very good source of information as it contains the latest info about most river cruises, along with their options, prices and dates. These can be compared, chosen and even booked online.
